Feng Shui Dreams
Why do I have much more complex dreams when my head faces South (as opposed to North) during sleep?
Please, no Feng Shui, mythology of folklore.
The most like answer (IMO):
You don’t really. The complexity of your dreams is probably unaffected by which way you face. However, by chance maybe you happened to recall more complex dreams when you were facing S. There may have been just as many complex dreams when you were facing N, you just didn’t recall them for whatever reasaon. In other words, recall bias.
Also, now that you’re convinced that you’ve had more complex dreams when facing S, you probably now expect complex dreams when S, and not when N. That primes you to take more notice of any complex dreams while facing S, and take less notice of complex dreams while facing N. In other words, observer/confirmation bias.
Less likely (IMO), but also possible:
Maybe you didn’t start off having more complex dreams when facing S, but something like the above made you think you did. But now you expect complex dreams when facing S. Maybe when you go to sleep knowing you’re facing S, and knowing you’re “supposed” to have a complex dream, that somehow actually triggers your brain into having a complex dream. In other words, maybe it started as recall bias or something, but now you’ve made it “real.”
However, I think there’s virtually no possiblity that compass direction itself could really influence you dreams. Magnetic field lines are way too weak, and there’s no known way they could have sufficient influence on your brain to affect your dreams.
