Feng Shui, how do you determine “North” (different books advise diff things)?

i have 4 feng shui books, some of them say that you orient the house according to the front door, and also each room, to that door. So our house front door faces south, so does that mean that the back door is “north”? It’s just common sense to me, but I also have a book that says the front door is always “North”.

Feng Shui can be quite confusing these days, because you have a mix of New Age Feng Shui and traditional Compass Feng Shui. First let me provide some clarification for you so you can decide how best to apply the method you are asking about.

The method you are referring to comes from the school of Feng Shui called the Black Tantric Hat Feng Shui. It was developed by Professor Lin Yun during the 70′s or 80′s in northern California where he was a teacher. Many traditional Feng Shui practitioners have not accepted his form of Feng Shui, because it has only be around for 20 – 30 some odd years, whereas traditional Feng Shui has been around for well over thousands of year.

To answer your question, you can apply the Ba Gua chart to your home two ways. One way is to use the main door or entry way into the home to determine where the different sectors are located in your home and in a particular room. So with this method there is NO need to to consider the use of compass directions. The reference point is always the doorway or entry way, not compass direction. If you use the location of the door as the reference poin, your Marriage/Relationship sector is the upper right hand corner of the room. Your Wealth/Prosperity corner is the upper left hand corner of the room.

The second method was developed to appease the traditional Feng Shui practitioners by incorporating the compass directions. This method also uses the Ba Chart/Map, however, for each sector there is a corresponding compass direction as well. Therefore, your Love and Marriage sector is located in the Southwest location. To apply this method, you just simply stand in the middle of the room with your compass, if you are applying the Ba Gua Chart to just a single room, or the middle of your home, if you are applying the Ba Gua Chart to the entire house, and find out where Southwest is located according to your compass reading. Southwest would be your Marriage /Relationship corner. The Wealth/Prosperity corner would be in the Southeast.

Please be careful using this method of Feng Shui. Try it out and see what result you get. However, this method of Feng Shui has many flaws and therefore, not widely used by traditional Feng Shui practitioners. It doesn’t hurt to test it and see what happens. If you do not get the result you would like, you might want to try some traditional methods.
